The Urban Farmer
I am Sapanjot Behar, the Urban Farmer. I live in Langley, BC and I am in the blueberry agri-business.
Blueberries? What? You have never heard of blue berries? Well, I’ll post info on blueberries in another post. This post is all about me.
Why do I call myself “The Urban Farmer”. Because I am hip, smart, educated and totally not your typical farmer. I farm in an area that cannot be considered rural, isn’t even classified as a rural area.
I don’t wear coveralls, or hip-waders. I do ride a tractor. It has a nice and comfortable cab and air conditioning. I don’t roll around in the dirt, although at times I do get my hands dirty. I also maintain two blogs:
blog about technology and real estate
blog about Fraser Valley real estate
Well, why be a farmer? Especially at my age. Because it is one of the most rewarding professions. It is a treat to see a blueberry plant grow front a pint sized “bush” to being 6 to 8 feet tall. I also come from a farming background, family has been farming for generations. First in India, and now in Canada. You can say it’s in my blood.
Okay, so then why blog about being a farmer? Because I am proud to be one. Because people have so many misconceptions and stereotypes about farmers. I hope to change a few of those misconceptions.
There is also a big lack of information about blueberry farming, in layman’s terms, on the Internet. Blueberry farming is financially a very rewarding profession. This has resulted in a lot of new blueberry farmers getting into the business. But there is hardly any information on the Internet that they can apply to their day to day activities on the farm.
I will blog about the day to day activities on the farm. Pest control, IPM, spray applications, irrigation, fertigation - all will be talked about. I will also share my best practices with the readers.
So, if you are a new blueberry farmer or just a blueberry enthusiast wishing to learn more about this delicious fruit, I suggest and hope that you subscribe to this blog.
